Mt Kinabalu - One Day Solo Hike

30/01/2012 10:43 AM

So I'm having issues with the prices and the availability of tours in this country. It seem as though it is going to cost me about $400 to climb Kinabalu. That includes two days of hiking and one night’s stay on the mountain, as well as all the associated fees. Is it worth it is the question? The more I look into this the more unlikely it seems that I will even be able to climb. Reservations apparently are to be made from 3 to 6 months in advance.... not two weeks as I am attempting. However, I'm still maintaining hope as it is the off season that if I book with a tour company I will hopefully be able to get reservations. The issue is, is that climbers stay overnight at Laban Rata before summiting to watch the sunset. I am wondering if I can solo it in one day?

The more I look into a single day hike, the more feasible I think it is. From the HQ to the summit it’s 6000 ft and 8km. In comparison; the Tuckerman’s Ravine trail on Mt Washington gains 4 280 ft over 6.8km. I don’t quite understand the necessity of doing it over a two-day period.

I believe this to be what I will attempt.
