Taking it easy tonight I’ve decided. After two days of celebrating the New Year, I think its just what the doctor ordered. Last night was really fun. I was not originally intending to do much, but I ended up running into a few of the guys I went out with two nights ago around 6pm and had dinner and a couple beers with them. We then met up with more people and headed down to the river to celebrate the New Year and enjoy the festivities.
So by 9pm we had gotten to our destination where we had decided to watch the fireworks from, which is basically only a few hundred yards from my hotel, consisting of a GIANT roundabout with vendors set up throughout. Probably close to the space of three football fields, the scene was quite spectacular.
There are vendors of all sorts selling their wares, everything from food and alcohol vendors to toy and balloon vendors. Funny story, John, Eric and I bought out an entire street vendor of his 250+ helium balloons and gave them all to the local kids who were there to celebrate. It was quite the scene and a whole lot of fun. Probably one of the memories il carry away from this experience.
So I'm not sure if it is just today but I'm getting that “time to move” feeling again. Today I’ve pretty much spent my day reading and looking at airline tickets. I’m not entirely decided yet, but I'm thinking about flying to Borneo and spending a few weeks trekking in the rainforest. I’m feeling like I want to get off of mainland SE Asia and onto the islands for a new experience. I would leave in three or four days as there is much planning to be done and tours to organize. There are 5 or 6 two day plus treks that are worth doing. Lonely planet has an itinerary that advises four to six weeks there, so I may just follow the guide book and explore the rainforests and lush environment. There is also a lot of volunteer work to do there.
Anyways, I'm not entirely decided yet, I’ll see how I feel tomorrow. If I wake up feeling like I did this morning then I’ll probably book a flight if not, I may head down to the Mekong delta. I love Vietnam, but it’s time for a change and I can always come back.
Not much else new here. I ate a bunch of street food this afternoon which was largely the highlight of my day, and to some extent am surprised that I am not sick as some of it had been out in the hot sun for a fair amount of time. I guess mayonnaise can stay out in 30+ degree temperatures much longer that I thought.
So that’s all for now. Going to have an early night as I want to get back on an earlier schedule.
Photos possibly to come tomorrow.
